Judge Rules Embryo Is A Human

A Chicago judge has ruled that an embryo mistakenly discarded by an Illinois fertility clinic was a 'human' and its parents can sue under the state's wrongful death law (h/t: Freedom of...)

What does this mean for stem cell research? They rely on embryos thrown out by parents. Again this will be a case where if a third party kills the embryo it is a crime but if the parents do it, it is allowed. I think there is a moral inconsistency here.

The problem is, I think we seem to be moving in the direction as a society of saying, "it's human if the parents want it to be and it's not if they don't." It's a perfect example of situational ethics. No wrongs, and still no rights for the unborn.
