DC Bound

Sunday I fly to DC for 9 days of FEMA training. Following training, I will be deployed immediately to the field for at least 3 months - location to be determined. It looks like I will be supporting FEMA with damage assessment, debris removal, site preparation, site planning, and reconstruction. That covers just about everything, so it doesn't tell me much. Whatever. I just want to serve.

Pray for my wife and kids that they will be strong while I'm gone.

And I speak for the other SCO contributors when I say we promise not to destroy the blog while you're gone. :)

You'll be in our prayers.

Good luck! This experience will probably remain with you for the rest of your life.

My (award-winning) hair stylist is a vet school research graduate who's waiting until their girl is through high school before taking a vet-related job that would move them from this area, probably overseas.

Two weeks ago, he spent the whole weekend at the Gulf Breeze Zoo taking blood samples from hundreds of birds from hurricane area to make sure they were free of any virus or disease before being sent to different zoos all over the country.

Last weekend, he spent all Sunday afternoon at a local Baptist church, giving shampoos, haircuts and styles to dozens of evacuees, helping to give them some normalcy in their lives. He gives great haircuts, and I can only hope that the women emerging from under his cape felt as grand as I do after he's done.

I applauded his efforts then, your efforts now and the efforts and results of thousands of workers who try to create some order in these victims' lives.
