Contra what many supporters would have us believe, this doesn\u2019t demonstrate the mythic ability of Barack Obama to inspire folks to come together across the divide and sing kumbayah in harmony; rather, it shows that the take-my-ball-and-go-home-when-I\u2019m-not-catered-to crowd (of which First Lady Michelle \u201cFor the first time I\u2019m proud of my country\u201d Obama is one) has decided to come back and play with the rest of us now that The Other is gone and one of \u201ctheirs\u201d is in the Oval Office. <\/p>\n

To the Hollywood actors, the liberal blogosphere, and my more leftward-leaning fellow Arena contributors: welcome to the party. Most of us recognize that America is America, however much hate you may harbor for its leaders, and have supported it the entire time \u2014 through Reagan, through Bush, through Clinton, through Bush again, and will continue to do so through Obama\u2019s presidency. We won\u2019t agree on everything \u2014 for example, I hope much of Obama\u2019s domestic agenda fails utterly \u2014 but it won\u2019t stop him from being \u201cmy president too,\u201d or me from patriotically supporting my own country.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

There were reports that it was suddenly cool to be an American again<\/a>.  But such fair-weather patriotism isn’t patriotism at all.  It’s childishness.  The Right has been and will continue to be proud of our country, something the First Lady apparently wouldn’t understand.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
