Good-bye to Millard Fuller"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">Yesterday I received a letter from heaven, and while it certainly seemed odd, it was the news that an old friend had died that shocked and saddened me. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>I am grieving for the dear wife and family of a truly great man. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">Millard Fuller, the founder of Habitat for Humanity and the Fuller Center for Housing, died Feb. 3 at the age of 74.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>It appears it was a heart attack, which was a surprise for a razor thin man of drive and energy.\u00a0 <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>I didn\u2019t see any <span style=\"color: #c00000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/0,2933,487388,00.html\">news stories <\/a><\/span>on his passing; perhaps you didn\u2019t either.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">I had sent Millard a letter about the new ministry we\u2019re involved in called <span style=\"color: #c00000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/flourishonline.org\">Flourish<\/a><\/span>, an effort to energize Christian churches around the right priorities of creation care. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>He received my letter on January 27 and dictated a gracious response (remember when people routinely exchanged letters; how quaint).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>His secretary transcribed the letter and mailed it to me on February 5, with the notation: \u201cdictated by Mr. Fuller and transcribed after his death.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">Our firm, <span style=\"color: #c00000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rooftopmediaworks.com\">Rooftop MediaWorks<\/a><\/span>, worked with Millard and Linda Fuller soon after a late-in-life crisis, when Millard was forced out of his position as the leader of Habitat, the organization he and Linda had begun, by the board he had chosen. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>[When you spend much of your life in the public relations business, as I have, you often meet people at times of crisis.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">It was an ugly parting, and I first talked with Millard about it when<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ctlibrary.com\/ct\/2005\/februaryweb-only\/12.0a.html\"> <span style=\"color: #c00000;\">I wrote a news piece for Christianity Today<\/span> <\/a>on the separation.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>My research left me troubled by the board\u2019s rough treatment of Millard, so when I saw that he and Linda were continuing the ministry of providing low cost housing through a new organization, the <span style=\"color: #c00000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/fullercenter.org\/\">Fuller Center for Housing<\/a><\/span>, we offered to provide public relations services\u2014which we did for the next several months, introducing the new group to the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Calibri;\">When I learned yesterday of Millard\u2019s passing in this odd and unexpected way, my first thought was that when he was pushed out of Habitat at the age of 70 he should have stepped back and enjoyed his accomplishments and bounced some grandkids on his knee.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Maybe that would have prolonged his life.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>But instead he chose to continue serving people who suffered because of substandard housing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>He believed in serving his God and his neighbors in this way, which he called the <span style=\"color: #c00000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=WuNjmBA6SmgC&amp;dq=theology+of+the+hammer&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=bn&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=AH2cScPAIJyGygW83_2FCg&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;resnum=4&amp;ct=result#PPP1,M1\">Theology of the Hammer<\/a><\/span>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">So Millard died, figuratively, with a hammer in his hand, and although his life could have been longer, I doubt that it could have been much richer.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">People like Millard Fuller are great not because they are flawless or all-wise.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>Great people like Millard Fuller do great things by challenging themselves to do ever more, by motivating everyone in their path, and by trusting in a Greater God.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\">We owe Millard much and we do well to emulate him.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span>At very least, in his honor we should pick up a hammer this year and help some folks who cannot help themselves.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I received a letter from heaven, and while it certainly seemed odd, it was the news that an old friend had died that shocked and saddened me. \u00a0I am grieving for the dear wife and family of a truly great man.
