{"id":1860,"date":"2009-06-01T13:21:37","date_gmt":"2009-06-01T17:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stonescryout.org\/?p=1860"},"modified":"2009-06-01T13:21:37","modified_gmt":"2009-06-01T17:21:37","slug":"the-bailouts-didnt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/?p=1860","title":{"rendered":"The Bailouts Didn&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Larry Wright:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cagle.com\/politicalcartoons\/pccartoons\/permalink.asp?artist=wright&amp;date=090529\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GM bailout\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto\" height=\"285\" alt=\"GM bailout\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cagle.com\/working\/090529\/wright.jpg\" width=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Click for a larger image.)&#160; All this promise of rescuing GM and Chrysler, and yet, as of this morning, both are in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&quot;The General Motors board of directors authorized the filing of a Chapter 11 case with regret that this path proved necessary despite the best efforts of so many,&quot; GM Chairman Kent Kresa said in a written statement. &quot;Today marks a new beginning for General Motors. &#8230; The board is confident that this New GM can operate successfully in the intensely competitive U.S. market and around the world.&quot;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Please note 2 things:&#160; First, a government handout failed to both avoid bankruptcy and produce an automaker that could compete.&#160; Second, if this is what bankruptcy will do for GM, this should have been the <em>first<\/em> option.<\/p>\n<p>A bankruptcy that comes post-bailout, however, creates a GM that looks something like this:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cagle.com\/politicalcartoons\/pccartoons\/permalink.asp?artist=payne&amp;date=090530\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto\" height=\"310\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cagle.com\/working\/090530\/payne.jpg\" width=\"420\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(Click for a larger image.)&#160; As you&#8217;ll notice, the government is in the driver&#8217;s seat.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The plan is for the <strong>federal government to take a 60 percent ownership stake<\/strong> in the new GM. The Canadian government would take 12.5 percent, with the United Auto Workers getting a 17.5 percent share and unsecured bondholders receiving 10 percent.
