These culture wars aren’t new. Via the magic of RSS and Google Reader … a reply to Jared<\/a> comes apropos post from the Desert<\/a> (and I quote in full, because that’s sort of the point):<\/p>\n

It was said concerning Abba Agathon \u2026that some monks came to find him, having heard tell of his great discernment. Wanting to see if he would lose his temper, they said to him, \u201cAren\u2019t you that Agathon who is said to be a fornicator and a proud man?\u201d \u201cYes, it is very true,\u201d he answered. They resumed, \u201cAren\u2019t you that Agathon who is always talking nonsense?\u201d \u201cI am.\u201d Again they said, \u201cAren\u2019t you Agathon the heretic?\u201d But at that, he replied, \u201cI am not a heretic.\u201d So they asked him, \u201cTell us why you accepted everything we cast you, but repudiated this last insult.\u201d He replied, \u201cThe first accusations I take to myself, for that is good for my soul. But heresy is separation from God. Now I have no wish to be separated from God.\u201d At this saying they were astonished at his discernment and returned, edified.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Aren’t you one of those right winger Christians who [hates gays, is a hypocrite, hates women … does or says or thinks X, Y and Z] ?? Well, we might say\u00a0 … yes, unless they accuse of separation from God.<\/p>\n

[Update<\/strong>]: I should add the reason we might say yes is not because it is true (which is usually not the case) but because it is good for our souls to bear the burden of false accusation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
