{"id":3239,"date":"2010-05-03T11:45:29","date_gmt":"2010-05-03T16:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stonescryout.org\/?p=3239"},"modified":"2010-05-03T11:45:29","modified_gmt":"2010-05-03T16:45:29","slug":"finally-looking-at-secular-sexual-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/?p=3239","title":{"rendered":"Finally Looking at Secular Sexual Abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you only read the newspapers and watched the TV news shows, you&#8217;d think that sexual abuse of children was limited to the Catholic church, and was worse now more than ever.&#160; You&#8217;d be wrong, on both counts.&#160; And The Anchoress notes something eye-opening.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>In New York, Queens Assemblywoman Margaret Markey<\/strong> routinely presents a bill which seeks to open a year-long \u201cwindow\u201d into the statute of limitations on child sex-abuse cases, allowing victims whose cases may go back as far as 40 years to bring suit for damages.<\/p>\n<p>Because the bill has -until now- always been limited by Markey <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BFdtt8jRvDQ\">to impact the churches<\/a>, exclusively, it always either failed or been shelved. It is difficult to pass a bill that essentially finds some sexual abuse victims to be more worthy of redress than others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Markey seems to have figured that out<\/strong>; her new bill <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/28\/nyregion\/28about.html?src=mv\">includes suits against secular institutions<\/a>, and the previously silent civil authorities, among others, are reeling.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pointing fingers is so much easier than self-examination.
