{"id":615,"date":"2008-09-09T12:32:55","date_gmt":"2008-09-09T16:32:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stonescryout.org\/?p=615"},"modified":"2008-09-09T12:32:55","modified_gmt":"2008-09-09T16:32:55","slug":"liberals-in-media-opinionators-vs-anchors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/?p=615","title":{"rendered":"Liberals in Media: &quot;Opinionators&quot; vs. Anchors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The recent buzz around the conservative blogosphere (and a bit on the liberal side, too) is that <a href=\"http:\/\/newsbusters.org\/blogs\/noel-sheppard\/2008\/09\/08\/are-complaints-about-liberal-media-bias-working\" target=\"_blank\">Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews will no longer be anchoring<\/a> MSNBC&#8217;s election coverage specials.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>I have never considered hosts of opinion shows &#8212; including Matthews and Olbermann, as well as O&#8217;Reily, Beck and Dobbs &#8212; as examples of bias at a network one way or the other.&nbsp; The sum total of &#8220;opinionators&#8221; and their leanings at a network might be indicative (i.e. if they all lean one way or the other), but their specific pronouncements never seemed to me to be fair game for claiming bias.&nbsp; Of <em>course<\/em> they&#8217;re biased; that&#8217;s their programs&#8217; stock in trade.&nbsp; They have an opinion, and it comes out in their &#8220;Talking Point Memo&#8221; or their interviews or whatever.&nbsp; The bias is the purpose for the show.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, bias when it comes to those in the more pure journalistic endeavors &#8212; news anchors and reporters &#8212; those folks have a higher standard to attain to.&nbsp; Their stock in trade is their even-handedness and objectivity.&nbsp; When <em>they<\/em> abdicate that responsibility, <em>then<\/em> I see it as fair game for scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>In this, MSNBC crossed way, way over the line putting Matthews and Olbermann in the anchor chairs for their convention coverage.&nbsp; The idea that they thought they could get away with this and still insist they&#8217;re objective and balanced strained credibility to the breaking point.&nbsp; All the networks had other opinion folks on to give their takes on the events of the day, and that&#8217;s fine, too.&nbsp; But MSNBC put guys with their own opinion shows in the anchor chair during two events that are already very partisan.&nbsp; This says a lot about the editorial leanings at the network.&nbsp; At least they&#8217;re doing the right thing now, though why they thought this was ever a good idea is beyond me.&nbsp; The liberal bias in the editorial room is probably mistaken for &#8220;mainstream&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The recent buzz around the conservative blogosphere (and a bit on the liberal side, too) is that Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews will no longer be anchoring MSNBC&#8217;s election coverage specials.&nbsp; I have never considered hosts of opinion shows &#8212; including Matthews and Olbermann, as well as O&#8217;Reily, Beck and Dobbs &#8212; as examples of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[9,21,22,40],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-615","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-doug","category-liberal","category-media","category-television"],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/615","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=615"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/615\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=615"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=615"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/stonescryout.org\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=615"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
