Things Heard: e45v3

By Mark O.
  • A common error of today’s stimulus packages, they all raise taxes … which counter the intended effect.
  • “Alcohol may have been involved” … ya think!?
  • Obama and the Blago scandal … the real problem … recalling the Plame and recall the shoes are on the other feet now. And no, I think it unlikely Obama did anything wrong … but then again, neither did anyone in the Plame fiasco either.
  • Uhm, non-violent protest involves a likelihood of jail time … its in the cards and not necessarily a bad thing.
  • On opinions.
  • A book recommendation for the younger set, and one which I jumped on for my daughter’s upcoming birthday. Another book here.
  • Cash and Mr Phelps.
  • Verry English.
  • A bunch of book recommendations. I concurr on Father Elijah (the book that should have replaced that execrable Dan Brown thing). It gives me pause on taking Anathem on the holidays though.
  • Simply amazing.
  • Cost cutting comes to health care. As the Instapundit (somewhat annoyingly often offers), “more please.”
  • For your prayer list.
  • A story to watch (and why).
  • Modern art.
  • We were “told” that this was just “GOP scare tactics”, hmmm.
  • Whatever. Color me unsurprised.
  • I’m fairly certain that’s satire, but I’m not sure.
  • Russian worship demographics.
  • Not about crass commercialism or ever repeating holiday music “classics” I think.
  • I remember baking a batch of beheaded gingerbread boys when we studied the French revolution back in the day.
  • Serious about Islam.
  • Bad news about the Good News.
  • Our (recent) debt and promises in perspective.
  • Mr Obama’s education choice.

I am unclear of what you think the story is on the Caroline Kennedy nomination (”a story to watch (and why)”). My guess is that you think that if the media does not scrutinize her closely based on her supposed lack of experience, then they will not have treated her the same as they did Palin - is that what you are getting at?

If so, while I have no dog in the NY Senate race and have no opinion of Kennedy, I would not that “is someone who has spent years focusing on philanthropic issues that deal with education, health care, expanding America’s interests in the arts, writing books dealing with the right to privacy and the Bill of Rights, showing a passion for civil rights and serving as a national board member of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.” - a great deal of pertinent experience.

I would further note that she is not running for Vice President, but being nominated for the Senate - an important position, to be sure, but not a heartbeat away from the presidency.

It was not so much Palin’s lack of experience that concerned most of us - although that was a factor, just as it was with Obama - but her lack of knowledge and curiosity. She came across as grossly uninformed and dangerously naive. At least to many of us.

At least Kennedy - unlike Clinton - is actually a New Yorker…

Dan,
I saw one correspondent comparing Ms Kennedy to Paris Hilton regarding her serious approach to affairs. Hence … the suggestion that if the press doesn’t examine her critically, the gig is up.
