I was opposed to the first bailout package, I am opposed to this one. I think we’ve dug ourselves into some difficult economic times and I’ll have to be honest in saying I’m not sure of the answer, but I don’t think these bailouts are it.
I don’t believe the Republicans or Democrats who are supporting these will have enough support to continue to do so. I don’t think this auto bailout will go through.
I’m generally opposed to the auto bailout as well. However, I was tepidly for the financial sector bailout, mostly because if the credit markets seized up, every business would have suffered, not just the financial ones, and including those businesses that otherwise were on sound footing.
With the auto bailout, now we’re talking about just keeping select businesses afloat rather than filing Chapter 11 or something. Democrats, as the cartoon notes, are going to have to buck one of their biggest contributors, unions, if they’re going to oppose it. I think that’ll be quite difficult. Although, the election is over, so that may make things a tad easier.
