"Edgy" Film to Get Out the Vote
I’d use a different adjective, but then, I’m not the target audience.
A stunning 20-something woman hooks up with a seemingly innocent guy at a rowdy singles bar. Hot foreplay starts on the cab ride home and progresses into the bedroom.
That is until, while searching for a condom in the bedside table, she sees a photo signed "Thanks for your support!" from Republican candidate John McCain.
Horrified, she bolts, dropping her bag and spilling a campaign button on the sidewalk: "I only sleep with Democrats." The camera quickly cuts to a cool, bespectacled man with a donkey pin on his lapel. The couple’s eyes lovingly lock.
"Blue Balled" — an edgy, video short distributed on YouTube and other Web sites this week — has a simple message: If you vote Democrat, you are intellectual, hip and savvy. If you vote Republican, you are an untouchable — bumbling, square and uptight.
…and are less likely to have an STD, perhaps?
The 527 group putting this out is called "Truth Through Action". They actually sell "I Only Sleep With Democrats" shirts on their web site. OK, so then, what’s the truth that their action is trying to convey?

The video is eye rolling inducing, but like you say, it’s not really directed at me as I’m not part of the hook up culture.
This is a pretty old song and dance though. It’s no real shock that people have used politics as either a dealbreaker for a date, or to hook up with the opposite sex.
I don’t think the dealbreaker or hook up idea was the shocker, either. What I find interesting is that this is an appeal from a political action group to Democrats, and that it’s somehow a way to convey “truth”. So I ask again, what’s the alleged truth they’re advancing?

That they (the group) are petty and divisive people? I don’t know for sure, but that message certainly got through loud and clear.
Yeah.
Right.
That’s the message they intended. “Vote Democrat because our group is petty and divisive.” Kinda doubt it.
Doug,
To clarify, that’s not the message they *want* to convey, but it’s the message that’s conveyed, to me anyway. They’re preaching to a liberal audience who will eat up any kind of mockery of conservatives (not that Reps are above that sort of thing, of course).
Obviously the message is “Republicans are bumbling doofuses, but Dems are way cool and always get the girl.” That’s the message, but the only thing I think when I see it is “Gee, the person who wrote this is a petty (expletive deleted).”
“They’re preaching to a liberal audience who will eat up any kind of mockery of conservatives”
Not really, imo. Very true about liberal eagerness to mock anything conservative. However, this ad is aimed at the independents and undecided voters, not democratic voters, they already have them in the bag. Even if the viewer is not in the “casual hook-up” demographic, just like beer and car ads, the underlying message is “if you vote democrat/buy our beer/buy our car, you will have sex appeal”. Politics is being marketed like just another product. That, is (again, imo) the greatest tragedy in this. As distasteful to me as the shameless pushing of the unfortunately-all-too-well-entenched-in-our-society myth of concequence-free casual sex is, the cheapening of something as important as leading our country down to being just another empty connection to gut-level sex is sad.
