McCain delivers a strong, left hook

John McCain, after congratulating Barack Obama for his historic nomination, appears to have chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his pick for VP. (see CNN, FoxNews)
Palin, the Barracuda.
CHANGE… we can believe in.
In an essentially 50/50 race, this is an awesome, gutsy, risky, and potentially brilliant move. Can we say… Maverick?
Kind of makes you wonder what Hillary is thinking now, doesn’t it?

McCain just regained the trust of social conservatives like myself, while somehow, reaching out to women voters and undecideds at the same time.
Palin is perfect for this choice.
Hm,
While I am sure she personally is a wonderful person and her Down’s baby proves her pro-life creds with me, it seems that most of McCain’s argument was that Obama wasn’t ready or had the intellectual capacity to be President.
How could a first term Governor (two years in office) of a sparsely populated State with no foreign policy experience be ready to step into his shoes, if the need be?
So then, has McCain decided he can not win without the Clinton Democrats & women? Is this his attempt to secure their votes?
I thought he was running on his considerable experience, what is he doing now, switching to the change of Obama? McCain is old, the VP choice is pretty important, and I just don’t know her yet, maybe my concerns are baseless.
I’m so glad of McCain’s choice…. he’ll beat Obama/Biden…. 27% of Hillary voters will switch to McCain/Palin!
Go McCain Go!
We pick her over the likes of Romney and Huckabee? Really, Guys???
It is not at all surprising that McCain would pick Palin, the number one pet of the oil producers in Alaska. It’s just more of the same, a Bush third term. I’m switching my vote to Obama. We need to turn this economy around!!!!!!!!
I’m all for McCain. That was a brilliant choice.
She did great thing for Alaska.
Go McCain/Palin 08
A strong left hook. Hah, that’s funny. Biden is going to destory her in the debates. This is an insult to women, and to the qualified republican female VP choices. Let’s just throw a female up here and see what happens. He doesn’t get it, this isn’t about gender or race, its about the future of this country. McCain is old, let’s face facts, and you’re telling me she’s ready to assume the role of President at any time. Not to mention her connection to big oil, a sore spot of most Americans. This is another example of poor decision making. You can say a lot of things about Obama decisions to pick Biden, but you can’t say he picked some unqualified.
John McCain, experienced yes, wise no!
How can McCain attack Obama on experience and then try to tell the American people that Palin is capable to run the country? At least it keeps true with McCain’s history of hypocracy.
I think he made the pick to “woo” Hillary supporters that the media claims are upset with Obama. Unfortunately, Hillary supporters are not that dumb. They can see through it and they are listening to Hillary, not Sarah.
I don’t think McCain had an easy choice, or a good choice to make. There were problems with everyone on the “short list”. I think this was a mistake. She has no foreign policy experience, has only 2 years as gov in a small (by population) state and wants to drill in ANWR. It’s not about drilling, it’s about energy independence. Obama get’s it and understands that drilling is a short term solution for a 50 year old problem.
Sorry McCain, you screwed up with this pick and it’s going to show.
McCain is just trying to appeal to the idots who are mad at Obama for not picking Billary.
McCain is just a dried up cranky -dirty old man who has to be surrounded by beauty queens in order to look good.
His only motive is to play hide the salami with her in the oval office
As I note in my post on this subject (Rusty scooped me), she has more executive branch experience than Obama, Biden and McCain combined. Which is good since she’s up for an executive branch position.
Exactly what’s so brilliant about his pick? Do you think that Hillary supporters will suddenly vote Republican just because McCain picked a female running mate? Hillary’s supporters believed in her because of her creds–which, from what I can tell, Palin largely lacks–not just because of her gender. The fact that Hillary’s a woman made her all the more compelling for those who believed in her.
And, I agree with Monk-in-training, McCain has completely undercut his best argument (lack of experience) against Obama. So rather than being brilliant, I think this is a “What were you thinking?” moment.
For the job she’s being tapped for, she has *more* experience, Mamma.
Jack Peterson, the “pet” of oil producers? She was the Ethics Commissioner on the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. She quit when some of her fellow Republican were stonewalling regarding ethics issues, and she pursued the issue after leaving. No, I’m sorry, she’s is very much on the up-and-up regarding energy and conservation.
mccain is a hypocrite. he claimed obama is young and inexperienced and he picks a woman who is younger and just started out as well… so what shes a governor of alaska (of all places); does she have what it takes to meet with foreign leaders? mcsame is just pandering to hillary supporters who are not voting… a bone head move for a bone head.
obama/biden’08 already won this election because americans are too smart for this “tactic” mcsame is using.
More experience in an executive office, yes. Obama was the President of some club in college, should we count that? It seems nearly equal to hers. Seriously, can you really consider that part time Mayor thing and a year and some months of Governorship thing equal to the decades of foreign and domestic service of McCain and Biden? Obama is somewhat different, in that has won primaries and sort of earned his position, with no executive experience.
This is like a thunderbolt from the blue and not playing well with the men AND women in this Oklahoma office. One said McCain “jumped the shark”, and I am not so sure he didn’t.
She is also involved in an influence scandal, that has not been cleared up, and with the Ted Stevens scandal, this is just the attention we need.
All that aside, I really do want to honor her family commitments to life, and her faith in God. She does seem to be a wonderful person, and might make a good candidate someday.
mccain a war monger and palin from an oil family… gee where have we heard this from… another bush/cheney except this time, mccain will call the shots while palin is victim to his temper tantrums.
obama has obviously earned his position. all over the world people are rooting for him. obama is not even president but is respected like one. about palin? the world will get to know her in 3 months but it wont even matter because mccain’s bush/cheyneess will overshadow anything good about her
Jack Peterson in Florida has decided to vote YES for killing babies and supporting gay marriage, because he doesn’t like Oil companies who provide MILLIONS of jobs to hard working Americans.
Congrats Jack on the lack of wisdom and the lack of a soul!
Let’s put the experience thing this way, Monk. The Republican with the lesser experience is in the #2 slot, where she can learn the ropes. On the other hand, the Democrat with the lesser experience is going to be running the show. Seems upside-down to me.
just want to set the record straight on anyone suggesting Palin is as qualified as Obama or has equal or more experience. From 1997-2004 Obama was representing over 130,000 Americans in the ILL State Senate as the Senator of the 13th District, Palin was let’s see, mayor of a town of 5,000. Yes I think puts her on the pulse of the American people.
Oh and we can’t forget that University of Idaho, BS degree. I think that compares to Obama’s Harvard JD. Obama is responsible for 12,831,970 Americans as a Senator from Illnois each day, while, she govnors 670,053 people. Executive experience please, tomorrow you’ll be electing the mayor of Austin, TX. At least he’s in charge of more people.
It does seem upside down, Doug, but my concern would be that she doesn’t have time to learn the ropes, if McCain (God forbid) is unable to complete his first term, or any signifcant part of it.
Why not choose Kay Bailey Hutchison from Texas? Lots of experience there!
A co-worker pointed out that she is a former beauty queen, as are both of McCain’s wives. Looks like a trend…
Where’d all these commenters pop up from, fellas?
Rusty linked to the CNN story and the CNN website noticed and linked back.
Kapow!
Stay awhile, folks. 🙂
Here is a question.
Why isn’t her husband a Republican?
Her son, Track isn’t but who can speak to what kids do!
McCain only appears to have met her once, and offered her the position on the phone! Rommney and Pawlenty are surely shocked.
Personally this is a jaw dropping gamble to me, if she does not stand up under the scrutiny of the press, this could get interesting to say the very least.
I find it odd the length to which the Religious Right is celebrating this “pro-life, pro-family” ticket now.
They’ve had 20 YEARS of “pro-life, pro-family” presidents. They’re being used. The pols don’t want abortion to go away, it’s the only way the Republicans ever win any elections anymore.
It’s a bit sad how each four years, the Religious Right eagerly celebrates a new “PLPF” ticket, only to see nothing done.
Get on with your life. He doesn’t love you.
Dan,
Exactly how does a Republican president do away with abortion? By either issuing an “emancipation proclamation”, thereby telling the court they were just as wrong in Roe v. Wade as they were in the Dred Scott decision; or by appointing supreme court judges who actually read what’s in the constitution and not what they wish to be in the constitution. Of course, with the Kennedy’s, Biden’s, Pelosi’s, Obama’s, et. al., being rabidly opposed to protecting the unborn, they just as rabidly stall Republican nominee’s to the court.
While the McCain / Palin ticket is certainly not the best pro-life ticket imaginable, I will gladly vote for that over the Obama / Biden party of death (to the unborn).
I want to see them start asking Ms. Palin about the important issues. I’m assuming she has very strong pro-life stances, but what are her beliefs in regards to euthanasia, more specifically. We all know that, believe it or not, there is a burgeoning industry in Europe and Mexico that depends on this so-called Euthanasia Tourism, so why hasn’t she addressed this important issue, along with McCain? Is the insurance industry somehow waiting, and watching to hear the outcome?
